What does an Audio Interface do?

Audio interfaces convert microphone and instrument signals into a format your computer and software recognize. The interface also routes audio from your computer out to your headphones and studio monitors.

Things to consider in determining how many instruments are needed for your performances so you can factor in which interface would be best for your needs.

Here I will share affordable interfaces that are great if you are interested in Metaverse performances or just want to know more behind the scenes when it comes to gear. Will share price ranges and a little review of the product. The right equipment can make all the difference in your performance and improve your quality. I will list the 1st being my top favorite all the way down to 5 as far as affordability and quality.

#1 Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen

The Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen is one of the best Interfaces out today. It has become something of a standard for home recording and LIVE Performances. Since metaverse Performing, this Audio interface has gotten me through 200 shows. It has been great when Using my Dj Controller and also performing Ableton LIVE sets. The Scarlett is small but sturdy, and easy to travel with as it is not too bulky. It has two inputs. You can plug in an instrument and a Microphone. This is all relative to what you are trying to accomplish.

When adjusting the knobs, the LED rings around the 2i2’s gain knobs will glow green when the input level is safe, yellow when you’re nearing the danger zone, and red when the gain is too high. This is can be plugged in from a USB to your computer and synced to your DAW or your streaming platforms like OBS.

There is also the Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen If you are just looking for a solo channel. The price is relatively cheaper. Look into this one if you don't have multiple instruments and you just need one input. The quality of recordings and performances will also depend on the other equipment like your microphone, controller ext. The Scarlett 2i2 won’t hold you back, as it is very clean, has latency-free monitoring, and will be great when recording music.

#2: M-Audio Air 192|4

Price range - $120- 130

This is a great beginner-friendly and entry-level Interface. If you are looking to try performing and still aren't quite sure if this is something you want to do professionally or experimenting with streaming this may be for you. The M-audio interface is easy to use. You have your left/right output for your studio monitors, along with your headphone and input microphone jack. In the front, you have your input 2 is a 1/4” instrument jack, found on the front of the AIR 192/4 audio interface. This was actually the first interface I ever used when I started my music journey. It was until after a year of producing music and performing did I upgrade to the Scarlett. This was certainly great gear to get started as a new musician. The price range made more sense to me as well than spending more on the Scarlett at that particular time.

I was able to perform with this plugging in my microphone and my push2 for Ableton live music with no issues. Since, the upgrade, the Scarlett does seem to be better quality and provides some extra tools for adjusting the sound. If I was to go back in time I still would have bought this as it was a great entry point to learn more about the technical side of producing and creating music.
